Software update will enable users to download additional multimedia content while playing movies on the PS3’s Blu-Ray player.

Sony has confirmed that the next software update for the PlayStation 3 will add support for interactive Blu-ray Live features. The update is scheduled for release in late March and will enable PS3 owners to experience interactive features such as downloadable video content, ring-tones and games.

Sony detailed its plans Thursday to deliver the long-awaited Profile 2.0 update for Blu-ray to its PlayStation 3 later this month. Sony expects the PS3 to have a 10-year lifecycle.

Firmware 2.20 will be coming before the end of the month, and will bring with it Blu-ray Profile 2.0.
