There has been quite a bit of excitement about the possibility that Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update will allow Blu-ray titles to be compressed and transferred to the PSP for portable viewing.

MAKER of video gear Sony has decided to splash out on more functionality for its Blu-Ray second generation DVD player.

With HD DVD done and dusted, you’d think Sony would have time to chill out, max and relax. Nope! The U.S. government is investigating Sony and other companies that developed Blu-ray (Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Nokia, Panasonic, among others) for patent infringement.

With HD DVD deader than ”Cavemen,” Blu-ray survives as the lone high-definition disc format. But for how long? With on-demand and, ultimately, online streaming and movie downloads, Blu-ray could look prehistoric in a hurry.
